Why most UK workers hate job-hunting

Nearly two-thirds of UK workers dislike looking for a new job, according to new research.

A survey by independent job board CV-Library has found that 63% of UK workers dislike looking for a new job, with this figure rising to 70% amongst 18-24 year-olds. Long application processes are one of the biggest gripes for job-seekers, as well as a lack of response from recruiters.

The study asked 1,200 UK workers what their biggest bugbears were when it came to looking for work and found ten key areas that candidates hate the most:

  • lack of response from recruiters (57%);
  • long application processes (49%);
  • having to tailor their CV and cover letter for different roles (30%);
  • finding a role in their local area (20%);
  • vague updates from the recruiter (17%);
  • being turned down at the final stage (14%);
  • finding a role suited to their skill-set (14%);
  • finding a role that meets their needs (12%);
  • being hassled by recruiters (10%);
  • having to attend interviews (3.5%).

Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: “Looking for work can be extremely stressful, especially if you don’t have enough time to fill in application forms and update your CV. Worse still, a lack of relevant positions, low response rates to applications and being turned down at the last minute can really knock your confidence and leave you feeling like you’ve hit a dead end.”

He added: “Some of the taboos outlined in our research are unfortunately part and parcel of looking for work and simply can’t be avoided. Setting aside dedicated time to look for work will help to ease some of the pressures and, often, exploring different avenues at once can pay off. It’s important to be patient in your job hunt and remember that it can take time.”
